Placing implants to improve the fullness and appearance of a woman’s breasts has long been an invaluable aesthetic procedure for women who are dissatisfied with asymmetrical or small breasts. And for many women, implants are a vital part of reconstructive breast surgery following a mastectomy or serious injury.
Understanding Breast Augmentation
Like all forms of aesthetic surgery, the breast augmentation procedure is different for every patient. You can learn more about achieving your desired outcome during a comprehensive examination and consultation. During this appointment, Dr. Lerman will review your medical history, the size, shape, and placement of your breasts, nipples, and areolas, and the quality and thickness of your skin. We will also review any current health conditions, allergies, and medications that could influence your surgical outcome and healing.
Before the procedure, Dr. Lerman will recommend intravenous (IV) sedation or general anesthesia to ensure your optimal comfort. Incisions are carefully and discreetly placed to minimize visible scarring. Depending on your aesthetic goals and the type of implant you choose, the incision may be placed under the breast (inframammary incision), under the arm (transaxillary incision), or around the areola (periareolar incision). Patients can choose between saline and silicone breast implants, depending on the level of enlargement desired, the patient’s own preference, and the doctor’s recommendation. Additionally, breast augmentation can easily be combined with a breast lift for further enhanced results.
It is important to keep in mind that each type of implant offers distinct advantages. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water, so if they leak, the implants will collapse and the body will naturally absorb and expel the saline solution. By contrast, silicone implants may not collapse if they develop a leak. Dr. Lerman will provide ample advice to help you decide which option is best for you.
Am I a Good Candidate?
If you are a healthy adult woman with fully developed breasts, but are dissatisfied with the shape and size of your breasts, then you are most likely a good candidate for breast augmentation. Questions you should consider include:
- Are you physically healthy?
- Are you self-conscious wearing swimsuits and form-fitting tops?
- Are you unhappy with the natural shape of your breasts?
- Have your breasts lost their shape or volume after giving birth, weight loss, or as part of the aging process?
- Is one of your breasts larger or shaped differently than the other?
- Did your breasts fail to develop normally?
Regardless of your unique situation, breast augmentation is a personal, individualized procedure, and we always stress to our patients that it should only be undertaken for your own health and self-empowerment, and never for the approval or expectations of others.
