Brighten a Tired-looking Appearance with Blepharoplasty

Do you look tired, even when you're not? Does sagging skin impair your vision? Eyelid surgery can help you look younger, more alert, more refreshed, and even allow you to see more clearly. Dr. Oren Lerman offers eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, at our Manhattan plastic surgery practice. This simple, minimally invasive procedure helps improve a patient’s upper or lower eyelids by rejuvenating the skin surrounding them. Fine wrinkles, including crow’s feet, as well as bags and puffiness, can benefit from eyelid surgery. To learn more about whether blepharoplasty can help you achieve your treatment goals, schedule a consultation with us today.

Reasons for Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty can greatly improve our patients' confidence in their appearance, and may be recommended to address:

  • Excess skin that obscures the natural folds of the upper eyelids
  • Excess fatty deposits that make upper eyelids appear puffy
  • Loose upper eyelid skin that overhangs, often obscuring a patient’s vision
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles in the lower eyelids
  • Lower eyelid droopiness (which can expose the white underneath the iris)

Like other aesthetic surgery procedures, the exact course of a patient’s blepharoplasty treatment depends on the patient’s specific needs and long-term goals. Often, eyelid surgery is combined with one or more additional facial plastic surgery procedures.

Blepharoplasty is a relatively short surgical procedure that rejuvenates the area around the eyes. Blepharoplasty helps to overcome signs of aging and bags. To achieve a more youthful appearance, blepharoplasty is often performed with other surgical procedures, such as face lifts and neck lifts.

The Procedure

For the upper eyelids, surgery typically involves a small incision that is hidden in the natural folds of the eyelid. Excess skin and fatty tissues are removed through this minor incision, which is virtually undetectable even immediately after healing because of its discreet placement.

In some cases, lower eyelid surgery is more involved than upper eyelid surgery. The incision is often hidden below the lower eyelashes, and in addition to removing excess tissues, the incision can also allow Dr. Lerman to redistribute fatty tissues to eliminate puffiness. Some adjustments can be made to correct muscle laxity, and Dr. Lerman may recommend creating the incision inside the lower eyelid. While this technique requires no external, visible incision, it does not suffice to remove excess skin, and therefore, it might not be the right option for everyone.

The Right Candidates

Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty include healthy, non-smoking patients with no life-threatening illnesses or conditions that can impair healing and recovery after the surgery. Be sure that Dr. Lerman and our staff are aware of current medical conditions and medications that may impact the success of your treatment. Conditions that can influence your eligibility for blepharoplasty may include:

  • Any eye condition, such as glaucoma, dry eye, or a detached retina
  • Graves’ disease or similar disorders involving underactive or overactive thyroid glands
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease or other circulatory disorders

Heredity and certain lifestyle factors can impact the procedure’s long-term success, but the effects of a blepharoplasty are typically long lasting.
