Embrace Your Femininity with Breast Implants

Woman cupping her breastsBreast implants are an extremely popular way for women to enhance the size, proportion, and contour of their breasts, or restore their appearance after cancer treatment. After choosing a highly trained and reputable cosmetic surgeon, breast implant selection is the most important decision a woman will make regarding her breast augmentation surgery. A large variety of implants are available on the market today, each with their own distinct advantages. During a consultation, Dr. Oren Lerman can help you determine which breast implants are best for you. Saline vs. Silicone

Breast implants consist of a silicone outer shell. Silicone implants are pre-filled with a silicone gel, while saline implants are inserted empty and filled with sterile saltwater during surgery. A new type of highly cohesive silicone gel, also known as gummy bear implants, has recently gained popularity for the ability to maintain its shape.

When deciding between silicone vs. saline, women may choose saline implants for their economic value, and the simpler surgical placement (often, a small incision can be used) and post-operative care. For women who have concerns about long-term implant safety, saline is generally preferred. In the event of a rupture or leak, saline will naturally be absorbed by the body and pose no health risk. Alternatively, women who want an exceptionally natural texture and appearance often opt for silicone implants, such as gummy bear implants. Silicone implants are also extremely safe and simply require periodic check-ups to monitor their integrity. Any type of implant can easily be combined with a breast lift for even more comprehensive results.

Sizes & Shapes

Both silicone and saline implants come in a variety of sizes and projections. Women must also choose between a round or teardrop-shaped implant (also known as an anatomically shaped implant). Many women choose teardrop-shaped implants because they feel their shape more closely mimics a natural breast. However, unlike round implants, this type of implant can create asymmetrical results if an implant rotates.

Other Considerations

Implants can be placed above or below the chest muscle, depending on your body type and cosmetic goals. The location of your incisions will also impact how the breasts are positioned, and the potential appearance of scars. Dr. Lerman can choose from a number of techniques that will minimize noticeable scarring:

  • inframammary incision – camouflaged beneath the breast
  • Periareolar incision – hidden around the nipple
  • Transaxillary incision – concealed in the armpit

Like any surgical procedure, breast implant placement involves a certain degree of risk. Complications can include infection, bleeding, implant rupture or deflation, or capsular contracture, a painful formation of scar tissue and tightening around the implant. In the event of a rupture or formation of excess scar tissue, revisional surgery may be recommended to restore the appearance of your implants.

Choosing a Reputable Surgeon

The most effective way to further minimize your already low risk of complications, as well as ensure your long-term satisfaction, is to select an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Lerman underwent his general and plastic surgery residency training at the prestigious Institute for Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at NYU Medical Center, and afterwards completed a fellowship in microsurgery.
