Dr. Lerman Discusses the Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is a relatively simple surgical procedure that is not intended as a weight loss surgery. Instead, it is a body sculpting method that reduces stubborn fat deposits that will not go away through diet and exercise. Dr. Lerman offers a variety of liposuction methods at his Manhattan and White Plains offices, including ultrasound liposuction.

Our Manhattan-based practice helps to ensure patient comfort at every step, starting with anesthesia during your procedure and ending with comprehensive follow-up appointments for your peace of mind.

Anesthesia

Surgery begins with a local anesthesia to maintain your comfort. Depending on the extent of your treatment, we can provide general anesthesia along with local anesthesia.

Preparing the Treatment Area

Next, tiny incisions are made at the treatment site. These incisions are very small; with proper aftercare, they are highly unlikely to result in noticeable scarring.

Fat Removal

VASER liposuction by Dr. Lerman uses ultrasound energy to break down and remove fat from the targeted area with minimal damage to surrounding tissues. A medicated solution is injected, fat is liquefied with ultrasound, then gently suctioned out using a tool called a cannula. This method offers precise body sculpting with less bruising, swelling, and downtime than traditional liposuction.

Completing Liposuction Surgery

Once the desired amount of fat has been removed, a suture is used to close the incisions. Over-the-counter pain medication is often sufficient to maintain your comfort after surgery, but other medications can be prescribed as needed.

Enhance Your Results Combine Surgical Procedures

Liposuction can be performed as a standalone procedure to treat a specific area of the body or in combination with other treatments for enhanced outcomes. When combined with a breast augmentation, breast lift, mommy makeover, or tummy tuck, liposuction is often the finishing touch that provides stunning overall results. We can discuss all of these body contouring options during your consultation at our Manhattan or White Plains offices.

The Liposuction Recovery Timeline

Liposuction is performed on an outpatient basis, with recovery taking place in the comfort of the patient’s home.

Wearing a Compression Garment

Patients should expect to wear bandages, tape, and a compression garment to reduce swelling and bruising. Your compression garment will also help to improve circulation and maintain your comfort as you heal.

Returning to Normal Activities

Within a few days, patients can return to work and limited daily activities, but heavy exercise should be avoided for up to six weeks.

Managing Discomfort

Side effects such as discomfort, swelling, and bruising usually last for a few weeks, but start to get progressively better after the first two or three days. In the meantime, you can manage any pain you feel with prescribed medication or over-the-counter pain relievers.

Allowing Your Body to Heal

The duration of your recovery will depend on the extent of your liposuction and whether other cosmetic procedures were performed.

FAQ About Liposuction in Manhattan, NY

What is VASER lipo and why does Dr. Lerman use it?

VASER liposuction is a modern fat removal technique that uses ultrasound energy to gently liquify unwanted fat, making it easier to remove. The process is designed to be more precise, with less bruising, swelling, and recovery time than traditional lipo. If you want to target specific areas and sculpt your body with minimal damage to surrounding tissues, VASER lipo offers a safer, more refined option.

How does liposuction differ from a tummy tuck?

Liposuction removes stubborn fat but does not remove loose skin or tighten muscles. It requires small incisions and has minimal downtime. A tummy tuck removes extra skin, tightens the abdominal muscles, and typically includes liposuction. Abdominoplasty involves a longer incision and more recovery time but provides more dramatic contouring. Neither option is intended for weight loss.

How should I prepare for liposuction?

Before your procedure, Dr. Lerman will share instructions to help you prepare. You will need to stop taking blood thinners like aspirin and complete any required lab work if general anesthesia is used. It's important to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment. You should not eat or drink for about 12 hours before surgery to ensure a safe experience.

Will there be scarring?

Yes, but you and Dr. Lerman can minimize their visibility. Liposuction suctions fat from the treatment area using a slim surgical instrument called a cannula, which helps keep scars very small. Dr. Lerman will carefully select the locations of the incisions to make them as discreet as possible. He will also give you tips to care for your skin and help scars fade during the healing process.

Can fat return after liposuction?

Fat cells that are removed during liposuction are gone permanently. However, new fat cells can form, and you can still gain weight. To maintain your results, eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly to help prevent weight gain and keep your body looking its best.
