Tighten and Tone Your Midsection with a Tummy Tuck Procedure
Many of our patients' self confidence is damped by dissatisfaction over the appearance of their midsection. Despite healthy eating habits and diligent exercise, many people experience difficulty burning off the last few stubborn pounds of fat around their abdomen, or have loose, sagging skin in the area. Even if you are a healthy weight, you can develop a less-than-taut belly because of age, genetics, rapid weight loss, or pregnancy.
Fortunately, Dr. Oren Lerman offers tummy tuck at our Manhattan office. Also known as abdominoplasty, this safe, effective procedure can help re-contour the abdominal area for a more aesthetically appealing result that is proportionate to your body. You can learn more about whether a tummy tuck is right for you during a consultation at our practice.
Target Stubborn Fat
Many of our patients become especially frustrated when they work hard to tone their midsection, and don't achieve the results they would like to see in the mirror. Unfortunately, some people are genetically predisposed to store fat in ways that make achieving a toned abdomen difficult. Others may experience changes in hormones or sudden weight loss because of pregnancy or weight loss surgery, and can lose elasticity around the abdomen, leading to sagging skin.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck can greatly improve the contours of the stomach. What a tummy tuck cannot do, however, is replace the healthy eating habits and regular physical activity necessary to regulate your body weight. A suitable candidate for the procedure is in good physical health, is not overweight, and has realistic expectations for the results of their tummy tuck. The permanent success of an abdominoplasty can be compromised by fluctuations in weight, so if you plan to lose weight, or are considering becoming pregnant in the future, we highly recommend waiting to undergo the procedure.
The Procedure: A Closer Look
Abdominoplasty is performed under intravenous (IV) sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s health and Dr. Lerman's recommendation. A full tummy tuck requires a horizontal incision in the area between the pubic hairline and the navel. During the procedure, Dr. Lerman will restore the abdominal muscles and remove excess fat and skin through the small opening, then seal it with sutures, skin adhesives, tapes, or clips. In some cases, a second incision may be made around the navel to address additional skin in the upper abdomen. The rejuvenated body contours may be obscured by initial swelling as the abdominal muscles and tissues heal, which typically lasts only a week or two.
