Tummy Tuck Candidacy
A tummy tuck can greatly improve the contours of the stomach. What a tummy tuck cannot do, however, is replace the healthy eating habits and regular physical activity necessary to regulate your body weight.
A suitable candidate for the procedure is in good physical health, is not overweight, and has realistic expectations for the results of their tummy tuck. The permanent success of an abdominoplasty can be compromised by fluctuations in weight, so if you plan to lose weight, or are considering becoming pregnant in the future, we highly recommend waiting to undergo the procedure.
Tummy Tuck Step-by-Step
Tummy tuck procedures take about two hours.
Tummy Tuck Recovery
After a tummy tuck with Dr. Lerman in Manhattan or Westchester County, patients can typically return home the same day. We will place bandages over your incisions and provide detailed instructions on how to care for the surgical site in the days and weeks to come.
We will likely provide prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics. Take these medicines as instructed to ensure your recovery is as smooth and comfortable as possible.
Swelling and bruising around the belly is normal and usually lasts for around a week or two. Once the swelling subsides, you should be able to notice the improved contours of your midsection.

Tummy Tuck FAQs
What is a mini tummy tuck?
A mini tummy tuck is a procedure that only addresses excess skin and fat above the pubic area. A full tummy tuck, on the other hand, refines the appearance of the entire abdominal area. Dr. Lerman personalizes every abdominoplasty he performs to achieve each patient's unique cosmetic goals, so the distinction between a mini tummy tuck and a full tummy tuck is not particularly important at our Manhattan practice.
Will insurance cover a tummy tuck?
Not except in very rare cases. Unless you are experiencing low back pain, chronic skin irritation, or other medical concerns, abdominoplasty is a purely cosmetic procedure with no physical health benefits, so your insurance almost certainly won't contribute towards the surgery. We can discuss the costs of tummy tuck surgery and potential financing options during your initial consultation at our offices in Manhattan or Westchester County.
Will a tummy tuck help me lose weight?
No. Tummy tucks and liposuction are not weight loss procedures, and they are not alternatives to a healthy diet and regular exercise. However, many men and women who have achieved significant weight loss choose abdominoplasty to help them refine their figures.
Will my tummy tuck be permanent?
Your abdominoplasty will remove excess skin and fat from your abdominal area, so in a sense, the results will be permanent. However, if your weight fluctuates in the future, you may redevelop some loose skin and fat deposits in your belly. Of course, our skin loosens as we age so you may lose some definition in your abdomen over time. To maintain your results for as long as possible, eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
Can a tummy tuck correct stretch marks?
If your stretch marks are on areas of your skin that will be removed during your tummy tuck, then the procedure will eliminate them. However, if you have stretch marks higher up on your abdomen, then a tummy tuck alone will not address them.
What are the risks of a tummy tuck?
Abdominoplasty involves the same risks as any other surgical procedure. The potential complications include infection, negative reactions to anesthesia, and poor healing. You will greatly mitigate the risks of plastic surgery by choosing a board-certified surgeon like Dr. Lerman. Dr. Lerman adheres to the highest safety standards, and he only performs surgery on excellent candidates who are at little risk of complications.
In many cases, Dr. Lerman combines tummy tuck surgeries with liposuction to eliminate stubborn fat and create the attractive silhouettes that patients want. At his offices in New York City and Westchester County, Dr. Lerman utilizes modern liposuction techniques that remove fat as precisely and comfortably as possible.
Dr. Lerman is particularly proud to offer VASER® liposuction, a state-of-the-art approach that uses ultrasound technology to break apart fat cells before they are extracted.
Many patients who are interested in abdominoplasty are pleased to discover that their cosmetic goals can be achieved through liposuction alone. To find out which approach is right for you, contact our team today.
