For women who are unhappy with the size of their breasts, breast augmentation means placing a breast implant underneath the breast tissue to increase the size of the breast. Breast augmentation is the most common type of cosmetic surgery performed in the United States every year and there are a few different ways of doing breast augmentation, but most of the time it includes putting in a breast implant underneath the tissue. There are options for different types of breast implants: you can use a silicon implant, you can use a saline implant. And there are options for different sizes and shapes. Nowadays we have the latest silicon breast implant, which is a form-stable, anatomically-shaped implant, which can give a little more natural, teardrop shape to the breast. Some people call these implants a "gummy bear implant" because they feel more like a gummy bear, they're a little bit more firm. The most common type of breast implant used is the standard silicon breast implant. There are a variety of different ways of performing breast augmentation, including the location of the implant, either above the muscle or below the muscle - and also the type of scar that we use to place the implant. We can place the scar in the fold of the breast and we can place the scar on the areola itself, and sometimes we can even place the scar in the axilla, or underneath the armpit. Usually, the consultation for a breast augmentation starts with a conversation in my office and we discuss why you want to have a breast augmentation and whether or not that's the best option for you. Some women who come in for a breast augmentation realize that they need a breast lift in addition to the breast augmentation or without the breast augmentation. We go over what the risks and benefits are to use a breast implant and we go over what the alternatives are. I will show you pictures of what to expect after breast augmentation and then I will examine you and talk about what the best option is for you.
