Man: Many women complain of large breasts that are heavy. That are
pendulous and drooping. Very often it's associated with neck pain or back
pain or shoulder pain, or even grooving from the bra strap because of heavy
breasts. And the treatment for these symptoms is a breast reduction. The
goal is to reduce the size of the breasts, but also to lift the nipple
areolar complex into a more youthful position, and reshape the breast to
give you a more youthful, more aesthetically pleasing breast.
A lot of women come in and ask about a breast lift, when what they really
need is a breast reduction, to make the size of their breasts smaller. And
these operations go hand-in-hand. They're very similar operations, with
similar scars. You can have a breast reduction with a scar that goes around
the nipple and down the middle, like a lollipop. That's my preferred
method. It's a short scar breast reduction, or a vertical breast reduction.
Another type of breast reduction is where the scar goes along the fold of
the breast. And that's a more typical type of scar that you would see. For
a consultation, for breast reduction, I typically spend a hour with a
patient. We go over what the risks are of the surgery, what the
alternatives are. I show pictures of what you might expect after breast
reduction. And then, of course, I examine you to determine what the best
method is for breast reduction in your case, and what type of scars you
might expect.
A lot of people are concerned about the sensation to the nipple after
breast reduction, although usually the sensation to the nipple's
unaffected. There is the possibility that you can decrease the sensation to
the nipple, but typically this is not a common occurrence.
Some of the risks of breast reduction include, delayed wound healing, or
suboptimal scarring, but a breast reduction is usually an operation that
has a very very high satisfaction with patients who need it. And now you
have a much more proportional size breast mound, a lot of people find that
they're able to go to the gym and work out, and do things that they simply
weren't able to do before because the large breasts were in the way.
In some cases, breast reduction can be covered by insurance, but it really
depends on the person. And we will work with you to determine if insurance
will pay for that procedure or not.
