The goal of blepharoplasty is to rejuvenate the eyes and the skin around
the eyes. One of the most common complaints that I hear patients tell me is
that they look tired or they feel like they're looking older. And usually
the most common area that they're concerned about is the skin around the
eyes.
Blepharoplasty includes a number of different procedures to remove some
excess skin or some excess fat, including some of the bulging of the fat
pockets underneath the eyes that some people call the "bags" under their
eyes.
And sometimes we inject fat back in to certain locations to try to blend
the area between the eye and the cheek, and look at the patient's whole
face as a whole, and not just focus on the eyes. Blepharoplasty is a
relatively short operation with a relatively quick recovery. Most people
can be back at work within a week. The operation itself takes anywhere
between 1 and 2 hours and it can sometimes be done under local anesthesia
in the office, but it is often combined with a facelift or a brow lift in
order to address the whole face.
Consult for a blepharoplasty usually takes about 1 hour in my office, where
we go over photographs of what you might expect after surgery. And all of
my patients go for photographs before planning any surgery so that we can
sit down together and talk about what is bothering them.
